The Lothrop cottage is one of four family owned cottages located on a sandy beach, each with at least a 100 foot private frontage on Lake Salem in the famous Northeast Kingdom near the Canadian border in Derby, Vermont. They are located on a peninsular of land separating Big Salem Lake from Little Salem Lake. Cottagers enjoy unique access to both lakes, which are excellent for fishing, with plentiful bass, walleye and salmon. Each cottage has its own dock and boat which can be used with a small out board motor. Many of our cottagers have been coming to Lake Salem for years. About two thirds of the weeks are taken by the same families each year, but there are good weeks available for newcomers throughout the summer. The Northeast Kingdom is one of Vermont's hidden treasures. The area has been called the Switzerland of Vermont due to the presence of such beautiful mountains like Jay Peak, Burke, and Owls Head. The presence of numerous lakes such as Memphremagog, Seymour, Willoughby, Caspian, and Echo in addition to Lake Salem add to the beauty of the area. Montreal lies less than two hours away for a day of international food and tourism. The area has several championship level golf courses, tennis courts are available, and the fishing at Lake Salem is renowned as the state of Vermont stocks the lake. Hiking trails abound as the Northern spur of the Appalachian Trail passes close by. The best time, though, is spent right at the lake relaxing, swimming, reading a book, doing a puzzle, fishing, and generally getting away from it all. Because the cottages are all in a row (although very private), they are ideal for sharing a vacation with another family in a neighboring cottage. A perfect getaway at one of Vermont’s most beautiful and deepest glacial lakes. We have begun restoring our 1920 cottage. The new deck and landscaping have just been completed along with foundation work and a new roof. The Pisgah Cottage is a romantic and private with vast water views. It has one bedroom with a new queen bed, TV and has a jacuzzi tub in the room. The bathroom has a shower with all the usual amenities plus new towels & soaps provided. Enjoy the views from the living room on the new sectional sofa and just added a new smart television with direct TV by the fire. The full kitchen is well stocked to prepare all meals just bring the ingredients. Oils and some spices are provided. Take in the stunning views while dining and relax on the deck overlooking the water and walk down the steps to the private dock. We have a new gas grill. The Honeymoon Cottage is brought to you by the owners of Vacation Station (Homeaway #7188518) just 3 cottages away up a private dirt drive! Both cottages share the same private beach and are quiet, private and dog friendly! Centrally located in the heart of Vermont's beautiful Northeast Kingdom, The Honeymoon Cottage is the ideal place for family vacations, honeymoons, hiking/kayaking/biking adventures, fishing trips and more! The Honeymoon Cottage was built at the dead end of a dirt road as a guesthouse in 1930 as part of a resort along the lines of the Patrick Swayze Dirty Dancing movie, in which people from away would rent a cottage with access to a mess hall, roller rink, tennis courts and of course the beach. Only vestiges remain with the kind of privacy, views and open space that you would expect. Many of the larger houses were torn down, including the main house to the Honeymoon Cottage. With all the amenities needed to make it the perfect seasonal getaway for family and friends, why stay anywhere else in Vermont! The Honeymoon Cottage has a cozy dining table with umbrella on the deck with great morning views perfect for enjoying a quick breakfast before you head down to the sandy beach to the lake for swimming, fishing or boating. We keep our canoe at the beach and you are welcome to use it -- or bring your own boat as the public fishing access is only a mile away with free parking. There's also ample seating around the firepit - the perfect place for a sunset bonfire. The fishing access with boat launch is just minutes down the road and there are two large public beaches in addition to our small private one. There are several small country stores where you can stock up on fishing supplies, beach gear or just stop for a pizza, soft serve ice cream or deli sandwich and a bar and restaurant nearby. You do not have to drive into town!

Both cottages share the same private beach and are quiet, private and dog friendly! Vacation Station was built in the 1930's as part of the Edgewood Park Resort on Lake Willoughby in Westmore, Vermont. This small family association had more than a dozen cottages complete with a roller rink, mess hall, tennis courts, sandy beach and activities reminiscent of the Patrick Swayze movie Dirty Dancing. Only a handful of these summer cottages have stood the test of time, and thankfully Vacation Station - so called because of the antique train which chugs the length of the loft and extends around living room ceiling - is one of them! The first round of renovations happened in 2019. We jacked the house and put it on a new foundation. We also renovated the main bath and turned the old outdoor shower with dressing room into a private master bath. We also added a deck with outdoor shower attached to the second bedroom. Out back, we created a seating area with grill and picnic table off the deck and put in a private yard with firepit and seating area behind the barn. A smart tv and wifi were also added. The second round of renovations happens in Spring 2021 with a renovated kitchen, screen porch, dining room and downstairs bedrooms and rewiring and insulation in the kids' loft to help keep the cottage cool in summer and warm in fall. Enjoy 2 bedrooms on the ground floor--the master has it's own small private bath. Between the two large bedrooms is a large bathroom with a refurbished clawfoot tub, plus an outdoor shower off the deck. The third sleeping space is a large loft overlooking the living room for the kids with a twin bed and nightstand at each end! Outside enjoy the back deck with gas grill, an outdoor table and benches. Behind the house, there is a large detached barn. In years to come, we hope to renovate the second floor studio apartment designed for overflow. Great for families or a couples getaway, our cottage can be a nice refuge from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. There is a full kitchen with a fridge, microwave, electric range, toaster, and coffeemaker - we will provide dish soap, hand soap, a roll of paper towels and toilet paper. We ask that you bring your own beach and bath towels. We have a flat screen tv in the living area space with Blu-ray DVD player and also a host of movies to choose from. There are also a few board games, uno, deck of cards, and beach toys for you to enjoy as well. There are two queen bedrooms to fit 4 people/ 2 couples comfortably on the first floor. There is a full bath on the main level with a tub and a shower. The upstairs is a large bedroom with a queen bed and an additional twin to accommodate additional guests or kids. Island Pond is a two mile by one mile lake surrounded by private homes and a state park. The backyard is the lake, and across the road is Brighton State Park. If you desire more extensive options, you can drive 20 minutes to Newport or Burke in Vermont, or 30 minutes to New Hampshire or Canada. Island Pond is the Snowmobile Capital of Vermont, and has an extensive network of well maintained trails. Moose are frequently spotted on many of the roadsides.
